Which Extracurricular Looks Best for College TKG

Which Extracurricular Looks Best for College Community service trip, end of blog post.Just kidding, but wouldn’t it be easy if we just said one simple activity, you did it, and that was it? Sorry to disappoint.  Extracurriculars are an extremely important component in the application process and the answer is, choosing the right one really depends on you.Be X-Men, Not Y-Men These days, young people have a bad rap of being experts in nothing. We have a lot of random knowledge from surfing the internet (I bet you knew that cats are afraid of cucumbers) but perhaps have spread ourselves thin in the expertise department. Your job is to combat that stereotype.Universities are not just looking for well-rounded students, they are looking for well-rounded classes. Think of the X-Men. If everyone sort of had a little bit of every superpower, would they really be the X-Men? No. They would each be able to shoot a few icicles, have some claws between them, and kind of fly, and we’d wonder why they couldn’t really do anything memorab le. We’d call them the Y-Men. Universities want X-Men. They want classes comprised of one really great pyrotechnic, one person with super strength, one who can jump great distances, one who can walk through walls, and all of whom, when together, are unstoppable. Be X-Men.  We recommend picking something you really love--perhaps something you could see yourself pursuing as a major or in the long term--and then, really dive into it.Choose a Group of Activities Pick a theme and explore it through a group of activities. For example, say you like engineering, you shouldn’t just be in engineering club at school, but you should also have an internship at an architecture firm, take a course on engineering online, and a summer program on engineering, as well. Between two and four activities related to your theme is appropriate. Also, don’t just join the club, become the president. If you only have two to four activities in your arsenal, you should really have room to go for it with al l of them. It’s not about quantity over quality, it’s about balancing both and cultivating a refined list of extracurriculars in an area about which you are passionate.            But What Am I Passionate About???It doesn’t have to be hard. When honing in on a theme or a group of activities, just be yourself. Start to think about what you would do on a Saturday if no one was paying attention to you.  Do you love history? Become an expert in it. Are you an avid reader? Become president of the book club, intern at a publishing house, read over 100 books this year, and put all of that on your resume.  Remember, every other X-Men is already taken. Find your unique superpower and become an expert in it.If you need help figuring out what group of extracurriculars is perfect for you, reach out to use here. Advising kids about the college process is our superpower.

Art As Function Essay Example For Students

Art As Function Essay Art is an act of or result of creation, when images and objects, sights and sounds, or drawings and carvings convey beauty or realize the imagination of the artist. Its purpose is self-expression or the shared enjoyment of its creation. Much about art is controversial, including the very definition of art. In Everyday Use by Alice Walker the narrator highlights the story of Dee, a woman who returns home to her African American family for a reunion. While away from home Dee adapts to the Islamic culture and changes her name to, Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. While visiting home she asks her mother for items that her uncle made years back and for a pair of quilts that once belong to her deceased grandmother; her mother explains that she cannot give the quilts to her because she has promised the quilts the her younger sister, Maggie. Dee (Wangero) claims that her sister will ruin the quilts, Maggie cant appreciate these quilts.. shed probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use. Dee (Wangero) feels the quilts are too precious to be put to everyday use, she believes that the quilts should be hung on the wall as art, and tells her mother and sister you just dont understand.. your heritage. The fact that she even wants to hang the quilts shows just what point Alice Walker is arguing in the story. Unlike Dee (Wangero) who is a firm believer that art should be solely decorative, her mother and sister believe that is should be used for everyday purposes also. Art is created and expressed in so many ways, and should not just be decorative as Dee would like, but should be functional as well. In Everyday Use when Dee (Wangero) returns home she seems to be a completely different person. She now styles and dresses herself according to the African way of life. She now demonstrates an American who attempts to become an African, the only thing is she fails at it, and her new self does not seem genuine. Her name, her clothes, her hair, her sunglasses, her patronizing speech, and her black Muslim companion are all quite ridiculous now, considering she doesnt seem to know much about this new African culture she has adapted to. It amazing that she would want to have a culture at all when she doesnt want to even claim the small rural Georgia town shes from, let alone her birth name; I couldnt bare it any longer being named after the people who oppress me. While having dinner with her male friend and family, Dee (Wangero) talks to her mother about the dasher and butter churn which had been whittled by her Uncle Buddy. She lets her mother know that she wants to take those items back with her, even though she only wants to use the churn top as a centerpiece for the alcove table. Dee ( Wangero) said that she would also think of something artistic to do with the dasher. It never seems to click in Dees (Wangero) mind that her mother and sister may have used the dasher and churn top on a daily basis. Dee (Wangero) probably doesnt care though because shes to busy worrying about how she can decorate her and Hakim the Barbers house. In Everyday Use Maggie and her mother seem to live a very simple life. They may not be as educated, well kept, or as trendy as Dee ( Wangero), but they seem like their at ease with themselves and with their lives. Their not trying to go out of their ways to being something their not and they respect where they come from. So when Dees (Wangero) mother tells her that she can not have the quilts, she should have not made a big deal about Maggie putting them to everyday use because when you think about it, quilts are very artistic, but the true nature of one is to be used for warmth. Dees (Wangero) reasons for wanting the dasher, churn top, and quilts were not necessarily wrong reasons, but those items held deeper meaning to the mother and Maggie. .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e , .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .postImageUrl , .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e , .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e:hover , .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e:visited , .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e:active { border:0!important; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e:active , .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf9f47ece0cff910da4e8e78f0e4e0c4e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Christian Worldview and Multiculturalism EssayThey were apart of their daily lives and were not things they wanted to showcase as decorative art. Although this story is about family, art, and culture, it also highlights how some people are ashamed of where they come from, and how they are worried about what other people think of them. In todays society this is happening everyday, you see people claiming new things or changing themselves into something that they are not and know nothing about. In Dees (Wangero) case, she was so ashamed of where she came from that she tried to kill her mother and sister, by burning down the house before she went away to college. Then she came home claiming her new heritage and acting as if she was interested in her familys past, which just shows how confused she really was. Anybody can change their name and appearance but that doesnt mean that a person is changed, because it can be all false like the show Dee (Wangero) put on for her family. In United States society today, there are those who say Blacks have no culture and make it seem as if they are ignorant and have no clue about the finer things in life, when that is indeed not the case. Or society acts as if Blacks are courting and sporting nonsense. This is not true considering the fact they have many races that are interested in the African culture. You see many races sporting dreadlocks and visiting foreign countries like the West Indies, Jamaica, and Africa. Art has so many meanings to different people, art can be grouped into two main categories, which are fine art and applied art. Fine art consists of painting, sculpture, and architecture; while applied art consists of decorative art, performing art, printmaking, and many other forms. Some people prefer visual art as appose to functional art. This is why people like to go to museums and collect art pieces, while other people prefer art in the form of music or fashion and so on. Art as function is great because there is so much that is involved with it. Art is constantly surrounding us in our daily lives, though some may not recognize its beauty. Alice Walker uses these everyday items in Everyday Use to symbolize the storys focus on the beauty and worth of simple objects and average people, over objects that are stylish and useless.

America and Nuclear Weapons Testing essays

America and Nuclear Weapons Testing essays American policymakers in the late 1940s debated the very controversial topic of nuclear weapons testing on American soil. Previously, American policymakers such as Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) head Sumner Pike stated that "only a national emergency could justify testing in the United States" (Ball 27-28). As the Soviet Union and communism expanded half a world away, hostilities broke out in Korea, which authorities asserted was a national emergency that would warrant nuclear testing on American soil. Authorities within the AEC believed that to maintain nuclear superiority and preserve national security, nuclear tests would have to be conducted in the continental United States. The Nevada Test Site (NTS) was chosen for a few primary reasons: it was a flat area with little rainfall to minimize radioactive fallout, the winds traditionally blew east towards the relatively "uninhabited" portions of Nevada and Utah and away from the heavy population concentrations of the West Coast (Che ney 36). Nuclear weapons' testing was essential for national security, yet it was not necessary for these tests to take place within the continental United States. Testing at the Nevada Test Site began in early 1951, and within the next seven years, 90 nuclear explosions occurred in the Nevada desert. The ominous result of these tests was the distribution of radioactive particles throughout the United States with areas in eastern Nevada and southern Utah especially affected (Some Questions 1). The tests were conducted to enhance the American nuclear arsenal – the goal wasn't only to achieve the biggest bomb, it included the development of tactical nuclear devices that could be used on the battlefield against enemy troops without causing harm to friendly troops. As Glenn Cheney, a radioactivity researcher and author, comments on the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union, "To fall behind, to become weaker, might be to practical...

Australia education appreciates cultural diversity from dissimilar people in the world. Teachers are employed from diverse parts of the globe, thus they are able to appreciate a diverse populace. They offer scholarships that are helping students, hence enabling them to study in Australia. The Australian government emphasizes on early childhood education where children are encouraged to enroll in education at an early age (Jaai). This is to ensure children are introduced to civilization and literacy at an early age. The government has incorporated computer skills both in primary and secondary levels of schooling, thereby enabling children to cope and understand the current trends and happenings in the world. Due to quality and relevant education in Australia, it has proven to be a suitable place to venture in coffee business (Marks). Australians habitually modify their dietary preferences. Anciently, hunting and collection of fruits was the preferred mode of feeding. The early settlers mainly kept European animals for meat, including sheep, pigs and goats. Financial Aid (Research Paper) Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Financial Aid ( ) - Research Paper Example Some are even homeless, and drastic measures need to be taken to restore their status and pride. Some Veterans require medical assistance as well. Aid needs to be provided to address the veterans’ educational and employment needs too. Therefore, both government and non-government institutions are playing an important role in providing financial assistance to the less advantaged individuals of the society. Government aims to provide financial aids through grants and loans for Masters Students, as well as veterans. Gauging how effective they are in this regard is, however, debatable. This paper will try to shed some light on this important topic. Student financial aid aims to fund students to assist them in paying their education expenses which essentially comprise of tuition fees, room, books, etc. for education at a college, university or private school. Financial aid refers to awards to specific individual students; these could be based on merit or need. Student benefits and scholarship are also different forms of imparting this financial aid to students to fulfill their education qualifications. Grants and student loans are also important components of financial aid packages offered to prospective students', especially those who want to pursue a Master’s degree immediately after the completion of their bachelors. It is more essential to provide financial assistance to those aiming for admission in Masters as the tuition fee per year for Masters is generally much higher than that for bachelors programs. In that manner, the deserving students who have done well in their bachelors and student life can be given a chance to excel more and secure a career for themselves. Therefore, steps need to be taken to facilitate their admissions into Masters Programs based on merit. It is a valuable opportunity for them which they otherwise might be deprived of, given the high cost of education for Masters. As Daniela (2011) explains, Financial aid is positively related to the success of academic studies, hence, government needs to focus even more on providing need and merit based financial aid. â€Å"Student aid recipients finish faster than comparable students who are supported by the same amount of parental/private transfers only and are characterized by the increased probability of actually finishing university successfully.† As Masters serves as a direct stepping stone form student to professional life, it is essential for the US government to give the required incentive, assistance and support to those young individuals who want to secure a better future for themselves and start earning to fulfill the needs of their families. Loans, grants and work studies are various kinds of financial aid that are being provided to students in the US for advanced studies. Much of veteran financial aid is focused on fulfilling the needs of a War-Time Veteran or surviving spouse. They are even provided assistance in the performance of daily ta sks, such as eating, dressing, taking care of the needs of nature, etc. The focus of providing this financial assistance is to empower the veterans who gave up everything to serve and protect their country. As education is an essential field where veterans need financial support so they can equip themselves with skills to secure good positions in job markets, the US government focuses more on veterans’

Inspectors questions Essay Example for Free

Inspectors questions Essay Eric is not even as caring as Gerald was, he abused his power as a man, taking advantage of her vulnerability and getting her pregnant. He then proceeded to try and make up for his wrong doing by stealing money from his fathers business to help support her. On finding out what he was doing, Eva refused the money and disappeared from Erics life forever.  Mrs Birling was the second to last to have her involvement with Eva Smith revealed by the inspectors questions. Being a lady married to a Birling she had already used her name to have herself made a chairman of a charity committed to helping women in trouble. As a last resort Eva had turned to this charity pleading for help. But after lying to Mrs Birling about her name, instead calling herself Mrs Birling. Mrs Birling was already prejudiced against her case, and made sure that Eva Smith received no help from the charity. She was in a position of social responsibility that she could abuse only thinking about her own name being used unauthorised. Priestly chose a wide range of ways that the Birling family affected Eva Smith, so that the audience could see how many different characters could be affecting someones life forever without their even realising it. These actions are such different scenarios for this encounter, but each has its own significance  The behaviour of each family member was under severe scrutiny by the inspector and the individuals actions were all up for judgement. Sheila for one had her happiness destroyed as well as her faith in her family. Each individual was not only under scrutiny by the inspector but by there family as well. There individual behaviours have an affect on Eva in different ways. Mr. Birling and Sheila left her without any form of occupation or income. Eric and Gerald both got involved with her emotionally and Eric left her pregnant whilst Gerald left her heartbroken. Mrs Birling, at the height of social responsibility, leaves her without a home, support, or any from of income, therefore by now she has no one to turn to and in her own opinion no other options but suicide. The Birling plot is superficial and Priestly has merely used this to alert others and get across his points about social responsibility. The inspector is only on one level, he can be seen as an inspector or on another level their own conscience to help make the family admit they are not perfect and do not think about the consequences of there own actions when interacting with others.  Once the Inspector leaves the house and the Birlings find out he was not a registered inspector, they assume because their reputation has suddenly been taken back to it original state that there is absolutely nothing to worry about. But Eric and Sheila are not so eager to forget and find their parents attitude amazing as well as become concerned that they have not learned anything from this episode. By revealing the involvement of the several characters the theme that social responsibility should not be abused is reinforced.  All other factors such as the inspector and Eva Smith can be forgotten but one fact remains and that is that all of them have been inconsiderate and selfish in their treatment of Eva Smith. Which could easily have resulted how the inspector described, a death by drinking disinfectant on the way to the infirmary.  So, priestly explores the issue of social responsibility using this theme and idea, which is reinforced, by the use of several characters under different circumstances. This play was written in 1945 within a week of world war two ending but set in the year of 1912. This was Priestlys way of expressing a sense of urgency which he thought necessary to pass on to society so that they would not forget what had just transpired and take heed. It is his way of expressing his socialist views.  To explore the issues of social responsibility within this play, Priestly has thought about the plot structure and how he has chosen to set out his dialogue. It is clearly divided into three acts. The first act is the initiation of the play. Its opens and immediately we are told who the characters are, the Birlings, where they are, in a large suburban house, and what they are doing, celebrating the engagement of Sheila Birling to Gerald Croft Gerald I am going to tell you frankly, without any pretences that your engagement to Sheila means an awful lot to me.  We instantly establish that this is a seemingly perfect family that have a good and stable life. There is nothing here to warn us of the shock of the inspectors visit. In this first act we are soon informed a long with the Birlings and Gerald Croft that a young girl, named Eva Smith has committed suicide, by an inspector who arrives shortly after Mr.Birling issues advice to his children and son-in-law to be. Our attention is being focussed in on the Birlings and it also gets us thinking about how they both have affected someone so badly. So it is here that we begin to think about how they both should have been more socially responsible. There is nothing to allow the audience to be distracted from the central theme so there is no sub-plot; it is a very compact structure.

Farewell To Arms: Religion Essay -- essays research papers

Religion in "A Farewell to Arms" For hundreds of years, writers have used religion as a principle issue and point of discussion in their novels. Hawthorne expressed his views in The Scarlet Letter, Garcia Marquez did the same in One Hundred Years of Solitude and in other writings, and even Ernest Hemingway used his writing to develop his own ideas concerning the church. This is fully evident in his novel A Farewell to Arms. Even in a book in which the large majority of the characters profess their atheism, the ideas of the church materialize repeatedly as both characters and as topics of conversations. Religion is presented through reflections of the protagonist "Lieutenant Henry," and through a series of encounters involving Henry and a character simply identified as "the priest." Hemingway uses the treatment of the priest by the soldiers and by Henry himself to illustrate two ways of approaching religion in a situation in which God has no place, and employs these encounters between the pri est and other characters as a means of expressing religious views of his own. Most evident to the reader is the strict difference between the priest's relationship with Henry and that which he has with the other soldiers. Hemingway repeatedly emphasizes this in all sections of the book, even after Henry is injured, when he is completely isolated from the other soldiers. The first instance the reader sees of this is only six pages into the novel. Hemingway writes, "That night in the mess after the spaghetti course . . . the captain commenced picking on the priest" (6-7). Hemingway's diction is suggestive: "commenced" signifies not only that the soldiers began to pick on the priest, but that ridiculing the priest was their main activity prior to dinner as well as after. Almost the same scenario is portrayed only a few pages later: "the meal was finished, and the argument went on. We two stopped talking and the captain shouted, 'Priest not happy. Priest not happy without girls.'" (14). The soldiers' ridicule of the priest is again hi ghlighted when Henry, bed-stricken with his injury, asks the priest "How is the mess?" (69). The priest replies "I am still a great joke" (69). The reader sees an obvious pattern in the relationship between the priest and the others. Mo... ...igion and God that the reader will receive in the novel. God may or may not be there, but that doesn't affect, and certainly does not help, anyone in the book or in the war itself. The views Hemingway presents in the novel at this point become, if not clear, at least more accessible to the reader. The priest no longer represents God. He does represent religion, for this is why he receives the verbal battery he does from the soldiers. But to Henry and to the reader he is simply another man with strong beliefs. God, in the novel, either does not exist or is completely apathetic to the actions of man. The one religious icon the reader sees in the book, the St. Anthony necklace Catherine gives to Henry, is disregarded and lost within twenty pages. Henry's strongest sense of devotion in the book is to Catherine, and in this way love for him is a "religious" feeling, but by no other definition of the word is this true. The priest nicely expresses Hemingway's message when he says, "there in my country it is understood that a man may love God. It is not a dirty joke" (71). The frontlines are no place for religion. God has no place in war.

Major Depression Disorder Essay

The scenario I have chosen to write about is the case of Sylvia. She is a patient of major depression disorder. Symptoms clearly show she is struggling with major depression disorder. The five dominant theories of psychology to further understand the case of Sylvia are the cognitive theory, behavioral theory, humanistic theory, personality theory and social dominance theory. Cognitive theory of psychology is focus on internal state such as problem solving, motivation, thinking, decision making and attention. It is a key component underlying the way people think and behave. Cognitive theory is basically concerned with the development of a person’s thoughts processes. It also counts for how these thought processes influence and how a person understand and interact with the world. The technique recommend by the cognitive theory to help Sylvia. In cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach which addresses dysfunctional and emotions maladaptive behaviors and cognitive processes. CBT is an effective treatment for various conditions like anxiety, mood, personality, eating, and substances abuse which Sylvia is and has struggled with all this. So this will be very helpful for her. Behavioral theory of learning which is based upon the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning. Behavioral techniques are widely used in therapeutic settings to help clients in learning new skills and behavior. It is bases on the belief that behavior can be measured, changed and trained. The technique recommended by behaviorism theory to help Sylvia. Applied behavior analysis technique is recommended by behaviorism therapy in the case of major depression. And in the case of Sylvia, this technique will be very helpful. Psychodynamic is also known as dynamic psychology. It is an approach of psychology, which emphasizes on the systematic study of psychological forces. The treatment of  psychological distress psychodynamic therapy to be less sensitive than psychoanalysis treatment. Psychodynamic therapies are basically depending upon theory of inner conflict. Psychodynamic therapy is designed to help patients explore the full range of their emotions, including feeling they may not be aware of. The technique recommended by psychodynamic theory to help Sylvia is Psychoanalytic and interpersonal technique, it is recommended by psychodynamic theory to help people like Sylvia who is struggled with major depression. This approach focuses on the interrelationship of the mind and mental, motivational or emotional forces within the mind that interact to shape a personality. Humanistic psychology is focused on understanding the unconscious motivations that drive behavior, and study the condition while processes that produce behavior. Humanistic psychology emerged during the 1950’s as a reaction to psycho analysis and behaviorism humanistic psychology was instead focused on each individual’s potential and stressed the importance of growth and self – actualization. The technique recommended by humanistic theory to help Sylvia is existential technique. If is recommended by humanistic theory to help a person who is in major depression disorder. Personality psychology looks at the patterns of thoughts and feelings that make a person unique. Some of the best known theories of psychology are devoted to the subject of personality. Almost every day we describe and access the personality of the people around us. Whether we realize it or not. These daily musings on how and why people behave as they do are similar to what personality psychologist do. Social dominance theory identifies several mechanisms by which hierarchies are developed and maintained. These theories focused on helping us understand and explain social behavior. Social theories are generally centered on specific social phenomenon including prosaically, Social behavior. These are all the theories of psychology that Sylvia could use for this scenario. All the different techniques that she can do. Each different technique helps to deal with her major depression disorder. They each help individually, but when applied together better results could be obtained. Reference Myers, D. (2014). Exploring psychology (9th Ed.). New York: NY: Worth Publishers.

The largest known contribution comes from the burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases affect climate by incoming solar radiation and out-going infrared (thermal) radiation that are part of Earth’s energy balance. Changing the atmospheric abundance or properties of these gases and particles can lead to a warming or cooling of the climate system. The human impact on climate during this era greatly exceeds that due to known changes in natural processes, such as solar changes and volcanic eruptions. Moreover, the first human effect for climate change is the greenhouse Gases in which human activities result in emissions of four principal greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and the halocarbons (a group of gases containing fluorine, chlorine and bromine). These gases accumulate in the atmosphere, causing concentrations to increase with time. Significant increases in all of these gases have occurred in the industrial era (see Figure 1). All of these increases are attributable to human activities.
